A comprehensive survey of 112 major source-available projects reveals diverse approaches to AI contributions. Only 4 projects (Zig, NetBSD, GIMP, and qemu) completely ban AI contributions, while 71 projects have accepted explicitly-labeled AI-assisted commits. The study found no clear pattern between low-level and high-level projects regarding AI adoption policies.
Background
As AI coding assistants become more prevalent, open-source projects are establishing policies to govern how AI-generated code contributions should be handled. This reflects the growing impact of AI tools on software development workflows.
