TCXO failure analysis

An engineer discovered a critical TCXO (Temperature Compensated Crystal Oscillator) failure in a ThunderScope PCIe oscilloscope prototype, which caused a 6.6% frequency error. The failure analysis revealed the TCXO had completely failed, causing the ADC clock generator's PLL to lose lock. This detailed technical investigation provides valuable insights into hardware debugging and oscillator reliability issues.

Background

TCXOs are precision timing components used in electronic instruments to provide stable frequency references. Hardware engineers frequently encounter oscillator failures that can cause subtle but critical measurement errors in test equipment.
