Perseverance’s radar revealed ancient subsurface river delta on Mars

NASA's Perseverance rover has used its ground-penetrating radar (RIMFAX) to discover evidence of an ancient, buried river delta beneath the surface of Mars's Jezero Crater. The discovery, made while driving across the 'Margin unit', suggests an older fluvial environment that could have been conducive to microbial life. This finding provides a new, promising target for the search for biosignatures at depth.

Background

NASA's Perseverance rover landed in Jezero Crater in 2021 with a primary mission to search for signs of ancient life in what was once a Martian lake. The rover is equipped with the RIMFAX ground-penetrating radar to image subsurface structures.
