Anthropic says its leak-focused DMCA effort unintentionally hit legit GitHub forks

Anthropic's DMCA takedown request targeting leaked Claude Code source code resulted in GitHub accidentally removing over 8,100 legitimate forks of their official public repository. The company has since requested GitHub to reinstate non-infringing repositories and limit takedowns to specifically listed infringing forks. This incident highlights the challenges of containing leaked code while maintaining legitimate open-source collaboration.

Background

DMCA takedown notices are used by copyright holders to request removal of infringing content, but automated enforcement can sometimes affect legitimate uses. GitHub's fork network system allows repositories to be easily copied and modified.
