In a first, a ransomware family is confirmed to be quantum-safe

A ransomware family named Kyber has become the first confirmed case to use post-quantum cryptography, specifically the ML-KEM1024 algorithm, to encrypt victim data. While this provides no practical advantage for attackers currently, it highlights the growing adoption of quantum-resistant encryption methods. The move is seen primarily as a marketing tactic to exaggerate the ransomware's strength.

Background

Post-quantum cryptography (PQC) refers to cryptographic algorithms designed to be secure against attacks by quantum computers, which threaten current standards like RSA and ECC. ML-KEM is a NIST-standardized PQC algorithm based on lattice mathematics.
