NASA's Artemis II mission has broken the 56-year-old record for the farthest human distance from Earth, previously held by Apollo 13 astronauts. The new record of 252,756 miles was set during a free-return trajectory around the Moon. Fred Haise, one of the Apollo 13 crew, expressed support for the milestone as NASA progresses toward lunar surface missions.
Background
The Apollo program last sent humans to the Moon in 1972, with only 24 astronauts having visited lunar vicinity. NASA's Artemis program aims to return humans to the Moon and establish sustainable exploration.
