Screw you Realtek

A homelab user details persistent issues with Realtek RTL8111/8168/8211/8411 NICs in Kubernetes nodes, initially resolving soft-hangs by switching from the in-kernel r8169 driver to the out-of-tree r8168 driver. Later, inconsistent network performance emerged between identical nodes, with one achieving 987 Mbits/sec and another only 3.45 Mbits/sec under similar conditions. The author expresses frustration with Realtek's hardware reliability and driver support in Linux environments.

Background

Realtek network interface controllers (NICs) are commonly used in consumer and low-cost hardware but have a history of driver issues and performance problems in Linux systems. Kubernetes homelabs often rely on affordable hardware, making NIC compatibility and stability important for cluster reliability.
