Uber plans to leverage its network of millions of drivers as a distributed sensor grid to collect real-world data for self-driving car development. The initiative, called AV Labs, was announced by CTO Praveen Neppalli Naga as a strategic expansion of their autonomous vehicle efforts. This approach could accelerate training and validation for autonomous systems by utilizing ubiquitous human-driven vehicles.
Background
Autonomous vehicle development requires massive amounts of real-world driving data to train and validate AI systems. Companies are exploring innovative ways to gather this data at scale beyond dedicated test fleets.
