Volkswagen becomes Rivian’s top shareholder, displacing Amazon

Volkswagen has overtaken Amazon to become Rivian's largest shareholder with a 15.9% stake, according to SEC filings. This comes as part of a $5.8 billion investment tied to their joint venture focused on developing electrical architecture and software for electric vehicles. The partnership has already resulted in successful winter testing of the VW ID.EVERY1, the first vehicle to feature their collaborative technology.

Background

Rivian is an American electric vehicle manufacturer that went public in 2021, with Amazon being one of its earliest and largest investors. The company has been developing electric delivery vans for Amazon as part of a major commercial agreement.
