Volkswagen shows its first electric GTI; there's no chance of US sales

Volkswagen has unveiled its first electric GTI model, the ID. Polo GTI, marking a significant evolution of the iconic hot hatch. The front-wheel-drive EV produces 222 hp, accelerates 0-62 mph in 6.8 seconds, and offers 236 miles of WLTP range with a 52 kWh battery. However, the model will not be available in the US market, continuing VW's strategy of offering different vehicle lineups across regions.

Background

The Volkswagen GTI, first introduced in 1976, revolutionized the hot hatch segment by combining sporty performance with practical hatchback design. The new electric GTI represents VW's transition to electrification while maintaining the brand's performance heritage.
