Five years later, Windows 11 brings back much-missed taskbar options (and more)

Microsoft is reintroducing several taskbar customization options in Windows 11 that were removed during its 2021 redesign, including the ability to dock the taskbar to any screen edge. The new Insider Preview build also allows different taskbar configurations for different positions and promises future improvements like multi-monitor support and tablet-optimized layouts. While some features like auto-hide and touch gestures aren't ready yet, these changes address long-standing user complaints about Windows 11's reduced functionality compared to Windows 10.

Background

Windows 11 launched in 2021 with a redesigned interface but removed several taskbar customization options that were present in Windows 10, leading to user frustration. The taskbar is a core component of the Windows user experience, and its limitations in Windows 11 have been a consistent point of criticism since the operating system's release.
