New research from Toyota challenges the common assumption that plug-in hybrid (PHEV) owners rarely charge their vehicles. Analysis of over 6,000 Toyota and Lexus PHEVs shows that RAV4 Prime owners plug in on 70% of driving days, while Lexus NX 450h+ owners plug in 80-90% of the time, with only a small minority rarely charging. These findings contradict the widespread belief that PHEV incentives lead to purchases by drivers who don't utilize the electric capabilities.
Background
Plug-in hybrid vehicles (PHEVs) combine an internal combustion engine with an electric motor and battery, designed to offer the benefits of both electric and gasoline power. There has been ongoing debate about whether PHEV owners actually utilize the electric charging capability or primarily rely on gasoline power.
