Zillow loses thousands of listings in fight over “hidden” homes

Zillow has lost access to thousands of Chicago-area property listings after filing an antitrust lawsuit against Midwest Real Estate Data and Compass, alleging they conspired to hide listings in a Private Listing Network. The lawsuit claims this practice harms consumers by limiting transparency in the real estate market. The dispute has resulted in Zillow's Chicago listings dropping from nearly 5,000 to about 1,700 homes.

Background

Zillow is a major online real estate marketplace that aggregates property listings, while MRED is a multiple listing service provider and Compass is a large real estate brokerage. Private Listing Networks (PLNs) are private networks where agents can share listings before they become publicly available.
