These researchers would be in Africa fighting ebola—but Trump cut their funding

The Trump administration's decision to cut $82 million in funding to the CREID Network, which researches emerging infectious diseases like Ebola, has hampered efforts to combat the current outbreak in the Democratic Republic of Congo. The network, established by NIH in 2020, operated 10 global research sites focused on pandemic preparedness. Researchers like Kristian Andersen, who previously worked on Ebola diagnostics and genomic sequencing, have lost critical funding for their work.

Background

The Centers for Research in Emerging Infectious Diseases (CREID) Network was established by NIH in 2020 to study viruses that jump from animals to humans, including Ebola. It received $82 million over five years before its funding was cut in 2025.
