Moderna gets $50 million to develop mRNA Ebola vaccine against Bundibugyo

CEPI has pledged over $60 million to accelerate development of three Ebola vaccine candidates targeting the Bundibugyo strain, with $50 million going to Moderna for its mRNA-based vaccine. The funding will support preclinical work, Phase 1 trials, and preparation for larger trials, while also boosting manufacturing capacity. Two other organizations received funding for alternative vaccine approaches using different technologies.

Background

The Bundibugyo ebolavirus is one of several species of Ebola virus that can cause severe hemorrhagic fever in humans, with outbreaks occurring primarily in Africa. Moderna's mRNA platform, which proved highly effective in developing COVID-19 vaccines, is now being applied to combat this deadly disease.
