Android phones will soon be able to detect spoofed calls and impersonation scams

Google is expanding its scam detection capabilities on Android to protect users from deepfake voice calls and impersonation scams, which caused nearly $3 billion in losses in 2024. The feature will work by analyzing calls from contacts to detect potential spoofing and AI voice cloning, requiring Android 12+ and three Google apps: Phone, Contacts, and Messages. This update comes as AI voice cloning technology becomes increasingly sophisticated and difficult to detect, even when imitating familiar voices.

Background

Impersonation scams using AI voice cloning have become increasingly sophisticated, with the FTC reporting nearly $3 billion in losses in 2024 alone. These scams often involve fraudsters using AI to mimic the voices of friends or family members to trick victims into sending money.
