Feds failing in bid to take a supercomputer from a climate research center

A federal judge has blocked the Trump administration's attempt to transfer a supercomputing facility from the National Center for Atmospheric Research (NCAR) to another operator, following a lawsuit by the University Consortium for Atmospheric Research (UCAR). The administration's surprise move to shut down NCAR, a critical research center operating since the 1960s, lacked clear justification and threatened important climate and atmospheric research. The preliminary injunction prevents the transfer of NCAR's Wyoming supercomputing center while the legal battle continues.

Background

The National Center for Atmospheric Research (NCAR) is a federally funded research and development center that provides critical infrastructure and resources for atmospheric and climate science research. It operates major supercomputing facilities used by researchers worldwide for weather forecasting, climate modeling, and atmospheric studies.
