Focused Energy raises whopping $240M Series A for laser-powered fusion tech

Focused Energy has secured $240 million in Series A funding, bringing its total private investment to $300 million plus $200 million in grants, making it one of the most well-funded fusion startups. The Germany-based company is developing laser-powered fusion technology based on the National Ignition Facility's breakthrough, but aims to simplify the fuel target design for higher firing rates. The company has hired key personnel from NIF and is working on eliminating complex components like the hohlraum to achieve the required rate of 10 shots per second for commercial viability.

Background

Nuclear fusion is a promising clean energy technology that replicates the process powering the sun, but achieving net energy gain has been a major scientific challenge. The National Ignition Facility (NIF) made history in 2022 by achieving the first controlled fusion reaction that produced more energy than it consumed.
