Starlink charges $10 monthly hardware fee in move away from one-time purchases

Starlink has shifted from selling hardware for a one-time fee to implementing a $10 monthly rental charge for its satellite internet equipment, similar to traditional ISPs. The new rental model applies to residential service plans in select countries and comes with the requirement that service cannot be paused. This change accompanies recent price increases for internet service tiers, which now range from $55 to $130 per month.

Background

Starlink, a satellite internet service by SpaceX, previously charged customers a one-time $499 fee for hardware including a satellite dish and router. The service has been expanding globally as an alternative to traditional broadband in areas with limited connectivity.
