Google has filed a lawsuit against Chinese cybercrime group Outsider Enterprise for allegedly using its Gemini AI to create and automate large-scale phishing scams. The group operated through Telegram, offering phishing-as-a-service with nearly 300 scam templates that mimicked legitimate websites including Google, YouTube, and government agencies. The operation resulted in over 2.5 million scam texts sent to Android users, 9,000 fake websites, and numerous victims who had their personal and banking information stolen.
Background
As AI tools become more accessible, there is growing concern about their potential misuse for cybercrime. Google's Gemini, like other generative AI systems, can be exploited to create convincing fake content at scale.
