A martian rock has lots of carbon on it, and it's not clear why

NASA's Perseverance rover has detected complex macromolecular carbon directly on the surface of Martian rocks at the Bright Angel site, marking the shallowest such detection to date. While high levels of organic carbon on Earth often suggest biological origins, the source of this Martian carbon remains unclear and may require sample return missions for definitive analysis.

Background

The Perseverance rover has been exploring Jezero Crater for five years, searching for signs of past habitability and chemical biosignatures left by ancient processes on Mars.
