NRC is (sort of) getting rid of "as low as reasonably achievable" standard

The US Nuclear Regulatory Commission (NRC) has proposed minor regulatory changes that effectively replace the 'as low as reasonably achievable' (ALARA) standard with equivalent scientific principles, rather than dismantling safety protocols. This adjustment aims to clarify vague terminology while maintaining the Linear No-Threshold (LNT) model, resulting in an estimated industry savings of only $9.5 million annually.

Background

The Trump administration has been encouraging the restart of nuclear power plant construction, leading to expectations of significant deregulation by the NRC to remove perceived barriers to industry growth.
