X says top accounts steal videos from other users as it announces new video tools

X is introducing new in-app video editing and recording tools to combat the prevalence of recycled content, which Head of Product Nikita Bier admits often consists of stolen videos from other users. The update, already available on iOS, aims to encourage original content creation directly on the platform, addressing the fact that videos now account for nearly half of all impressions.

Background

X (formerly Twitter) has been aggressively expanding its video capabilities to compete with TikTok and Instagram Reels, aiming to increase user engagement through short-form video content.
