Apple’s failed self-driving car program left a legacy of powerful AI chips

Apple's canceled self-driving car project inadvertently drove the development of the Neural Engine, which became central to the company's on-device AI capabilities. Although the car processor was never completed, the underlying technology evolved into the A-series chips powering features like FaceID and modern machine learning tasks.

Background

Apple spent over a decade developing Project Titan, an autonomous vehicle platform, before officially canceling it in 2024. The resources and architectural innovations from this effort were largely redirected toward enhancing Apple's custom silicon and AI infrastructure.
