AliExpress hit with record $625M fine after failing to make EU-ordered fixes

The European Commission imposed a record $625 million fine on AliExpress under the Digital Services Act for failing to adequately remove illegal, unsafe, and counterfeit products from its marketplace. Investigators found severe moderation shortages, ineffective brand authorization systems, and algorithmic recommendations that amplified dangerous goods rather than suppressing them.

Background

The EU's Digital Services Act requires very large online platforms to proactively identify, assess, and mitigate systemic risks, including the spread of illegal goods and unsafe products, with non-compliance carrying penalties up to 6% of global annual revenue.
