Amazon’s trying to launch a global satellite cellphone network in 2028

Amazon has filed an FCC application to launch a constellation of 5,105 low Earth orbit (LEO) satellites by 2028 aimed at providing direct-to-device satellite services for voice, messaging, data, and emergency communications. The plan follows Amazon's acquisition of Globalstar's network and its existing agreement with Apple for iPhone satellite connectivity.

Background

The move intensifies competition in the emerging space-based telecommunications sector, where companies like SpaceX (Starlink), OneWeb, and others are also developing LEO constellations to offer global broadband and direct-to-device connectivity.
