Full flattening of nested data parallelism

The Futhark programming language has achieved full flattening of nested data parallelism, enabling compilation of any Futhark program to parallel GPU code. This milestone concludes years of development, largely driven by student contributions from Cornelius Sevald-Krause and Amirreza Hashemi, after a long experimental PR dating back to 2022.

Background

Futhark is a purely functional array programming language designed for high-performance GPU and parallel computing. Nested data parallelism allows parallel operations within parallel operations, but GPUs require flat parallelism, making this flattening a key compiler challenge.
