How to speed up the Rust compiler in July 2026

Nicholas Nethercote reports a 5.59% mean wall-time reduction in the Rust compiler between December 2025 and July 2026, with rustdoc improvements accounting for roughly half. Major rustdoc gains came from reduced impl processing work, PGO training enhancements, and optimized sorting of implementation blocks, yielding up to a 28% reduction in rustdoc benchmarks. Clippy also saw notable speed improvements outside the standard CI measurements.

Background

Nicholas Nethercote is a prominent Rust compiler engineer known for his regular rustc performance tracking posts. The rustc-perf benchmarking suite is the standard tool for measuring compiler performance changes over time.
