ShieldFont is an open-source tool that protects human writing from unauthorized AI training by subtly poisoning text through font manipulation. Developed with Danish type foundry Playtype, it uses a custom typeface (ShieldFont Optik) that swaps content words to make scraped text toxic to AI models while remaining readable to humans.
Background
As AI companies increasingly scrape web content for training data without permission, creators and writers have sought defensive measures. ShieldFont represents a creative 'poisoning' approach to protect human-generated content from unauthorized AI use.
