Tracking down a Zsh history data loss bug

Michael Stapelberg investigated a Zsh bug where shell history entries would silently disappear from ~/.zsh_history over time. The root cause was identified and fixed in Zsh 5.9.2 (released July 2026), with the upstream patch available as fix 53454.

Background

Zsh is one of the most popular Unix shells, widely used on macOS and Linux. History management is a core feature that users rely on daily for command recall and productivity.
