Django's Steering Council has accepted DEP 20 to shift from its current release cadence to an annual release cycle starting January 2028. Every feature release will receive three years of support (effectively making all releases LTS-equivalent), with version numbers reflecting the release year (Django 2028, 2029, etc.). The change aligns Django's Python version support with Python's own annual release schedule.
Background
Django has historically alternated between LTS and regular releases on an approximately 18-month cycle. Python itself now releases annually in October, making Django's previous schedule misaligned with Python's support timeline.
