OpenAI launches ChatGPT desktop app for Linux

OpenAI has launched a dedicated ChatGPT desktop app for Linux, bringing its chatbot and Codex to the platform in preview. The app supports Ubuntu 24.04/26.04 LTS, Debian 13, and Fedora 43/44, marking OpenAI's expansion across all major desktop OSes. The release comes about a month after Anthropic debuted a similar Claude desktop app for Linux.

Background

OpenAI has historically lagged behind competitors in providing native desktop applications for Linux, despite the platform's significant presence in developer and open-source communities. The desktop app race among AI companies has intensified as Anthropic, Microsoft, and others compete for enterprise and developer adoption.
