Russian drones found near vital European offshore gas site, get blown up

Romanian army divers destroyed two Russian-made Gerbera-type drones found drifting in the Black Sea near the Neptun Deep offshore gas project, which would make Romania the EU's largest natural gas producer. The drones were discovered by a Coast Guard ship, and Ukrainian partners confirmed they did not belong to them. This incident adds to a pattern of Russian drone incursions into Romanian territory since the 2022 invasion of Ukraine.

Background

Romania has experienced dozens of Russian drone incursions into its airspace since the full-scale invasion of Ukraine, with some causing casualties and property damage. The Neptun Deep project is a strategically vital offshore gas development in the Black Sea aimed at boosting EU energy independence from Russian supplies.
