A third of web pages published since ChatGPT’s launch show signs of AI authorship, study finds

A Pew Research study using Common Crawl data and Open Pangram's detection technology found that over a third of web pages published since ChatGPT's November 2022 launch show signs of AI authorship or substantial AI editing. The findings align with Cloudflare's recent report that bot web traffic has surpassed human traffic, highlighting a growing AI-generated content ecosystem on the internet.

Background

Pew Research conducted this study by analyzing nearly 500,000 English-language web pages from the Common Crawl archive, comparing pre- and post-ChatGPT eras. The research comes amid growing concerns about AI-generated content flooding the internet and the challenge of distinguishing human from machine-written material.
