Slovakia finds Russian backdoor in traffic speed cameras

Slovakia's National Security Bureau (NBU) has issued a security alert warning against the use of NERO R-ONE high-speed traffic cameras, which contain a backdoor granting shell and network access via SMS messages from hardcoded Russian phone numbers. The devices are rebranded Russian CORDON PRO.M cameras made by St. Petersburg firm Semicon, purchased under a €30 million EU-funded traffic monitoring project. The investigation was triggered after opposition accusations and media reports linking the purchase to a Cyprus shell company with fake certifications.

Background

The discovery highlights growing concerns about Russian supply chain infiltration into Western critical infrastructure, particularly through EU-funded procurement projects where oversight may be insufficient.
