Lab supply companies have been selling antibodies using manipulated images

Post-doc Reese Richardson discovered that images used to market over 17,000 commercial antibodies contained manipulations ranging from background noise removal to fabricated data, similar to alterations that would trigger paper retractions. The finding raises serious concerns about the reliability of antibodies sold to researchers worldwide for critical experiments.

Background

Antibodies are fundamental tools in biological research, used in techniques like Western blotting and immunofluorescence. This incident highlights the ongoing reproducibility crisis in biomedical research and the lack of quality oversight for commercial research reagents.
