The German Sovereign Tech Agency has invested €508,640 over two years into Flatpak development through its Sovereign Tech Fund, co-organized by Modal and Para-Real Ltd. The funding aims to close security and sandboxing gaps that currently lag behind proprietary platforms like Android and iOS, particularly in areas such as networking portals and audio isolation.
Background
Flatpak is the dominant application packaging format for modern Linux desktop distributions, powering image-based OSes like Fedora Silverblue and SteamOS. The Sovereign Tech Fund supports critical infrastructure for free software ecosystems in Europe.
