How we saved 100 terabytes of memory by optimizing 1.1.1.1’s DNS cache

Cloudflare optimized Big Pineapple's DNS cache storage, reducing per-entry footprint by over 50% through five successive changes, freeing ~100TB of memory across their fleet. The optimizations also improved performance: insert throughput rose 43% and lookup latency dropped 19%, thanks to fewer allocations and better memory locality.

Background

Cloudflare operates one of the world's largest public DNS resolvers (1.1.1.1) under the Big Pineapple platform, handling massive query volumes with a 250B+ entry cache.
