I turned my security cameras into an automatic bird identification system

The author built a DIY system that uses existing security cameras combined with BirdNET-Go, an open-source bird species identification model, to automatically detect and identify birds visiting their property. The project demonstrates a practical application of edge AI by leveraging affordable off-the-shelf hardware and a specialized machine learning model for nature monitoring.

Background

BirdNET is a machine learning model developed by Cornell Lab of Ornithology for identifying bird species by their calls. BirdNET-Go is a portable Go-language implementation designed for edge devices like Raspberry Pi, enabling offline bird identification without cloud dependency.
