Raindrops are tiny lightning bolts, and they’re corroding cars, study finds

A new study from the Max Planck Institute reveals that raindrops can acquire charges up to 9,000 volts as they slide across surfaces, enabling them to electrically puncture protective insulating coatings rather than merely abrade or dissolve them. This challenges the conventional understanding of rain-induced corrosion and suggests existing protective strategies may be fundamentally flawed.
