After Broadcom's acquisition, VMware has been aggressively pushing its expensive VMware Cloud Foundation bundle onto SMB customers, even allegedly telling them vSphere Standard is unavailable. VMware is now acknowledging this overreach and promising an updated version of vSphere Standard soon, with more details expected at the VMware Explore conference in October.
Background
Broadcom acquired VMware in late 2023 and fundamentally changed its licensing model, ending perpetual licenses in favor of subscription-based bundles that have priced out many smaller customers.
