The shortest IPv6 addresses

The author searched for the shortest possible IPv6 addresses by scanning all 8192 addresses in the form X:: within the global unicast range, pinging each one. Only a handful responded, including addresses assigned to APNIC, ARIN, and RIPE RIRs, as well as some commercial and government infrastructure.

Background

IPv6 addresses are 128-bit identifiers, and the :: shorthand allows compressing consecutive zero groups. The global unicast range 2000::/3 is the only routable block for general internet use.
