A white hat hacker exploited a bug in Blockstream's Liquid Network to steal approximately $340M in Bitcoin, then agreed to return most of the funds after the bug was fixed. Around 3,400 of the roughly 4,000 stolen bitcoins have been returned, with about 600 BTC ($47M) still under the hacker's control. Blockstream has paused operations pending additional security improvements.
Background
Liquid Network is a Bitcoin sidechain launched by Blockstream in 2018, serving as a settlement layer used by several cryptocurrency exchanges. This incident ranks among the largest cryptocurrency thefts of 2026.
