Bouncy castle launches horrifying MRSA outbreak, striking 48 kids in Ireland

A bouncy castle at a community gathering in Ireland in fall 2025 triggered an MRSA outbreak affecting 48 children, with most developing skin and soft-tissue infections from a rare PVL-producing strain. All affected children recovered, though four were hospitalized. The findings were recently published in Eurosurveillance.

Background

MRSA (methicillin-resistant Staphylococcus aureus) is a leading cause of hospital-acquired and community-onset infections worldwide. Panton–Valentine leukocidin (PVL)-positive strains are particularly virulent and associated with severe skin and soft-tissue infections.
