After multiple deaths and injuries, NHTSA is investigating comma.ai

NHTSA has opened a federal investigation into comma.ai's aftermarket driver-assist devices after five crashes—two of which resulted in three deaths and 11 injuries—where vehicles using comma.ai hardware struck stopped or slow-moving cars. The probe targets devices that augment factory driver-assistance systems, reigniting scrutiny over third-party ADAS modifications.

Background

comma.ai, founded by hacker George Hotz, sells openpilot—a third-party driver-assist system that works with compatible vehicles. NHTSA has long scrutinized aftermarket ADAS modifications due to safety concerns.
