Cloudflare plans to issue quantum-safe TLS certificates

Cloudflare announced plans to issue quantum-resistant TLS certificates using Merkle Tree Certificates, making them among the first CAs to offer such quantum-proof certificates. The company is acquiring a trusted certificate root from CA GlobalSign to help establish ubiquity across the TLS ecosystem, with hybrid certificates offered for free. This move is part of a broader overhaul of the web public key infrastructure (WebPKI) needed to protect against future quantum computer attacks.

Background

Post-quantum cryptography is an emerging field focused on developing cryptographic algorithms that can resist attacks from both classical and quantum computers. As quantum computing advances, there is growing concern that current encryption methods like RSA and ECC could be broken, necessitating a transition to quantum-resistant alternatives.
