EU KIDS Act

The European Commission has proposed the KIDS Act to create age-graded access to online services for minors across the EU. Under 13s are barred from social media, ages 13-14 get restricted mini-accounts with one-hour daily limits managed by guardians, and from age 15 teens can manage their own accounts. The act also mandates safety-by-design features including limits on infinite scroll, push notifications at night, and default-off AI companions to protect children's wellbeing.

Background

The EU has been increasingly active in digital regulation, with landmark laws like the Digital Services Act and Digital Markets Act already in effect. This proposal extends that regulatory framework specifically to protect minors in the online space.
