Google thinks SpaceX’s Starship has to launch 1,800 times before space data centers get off the ground

Google has launched its first prototype orbital compute satellite aboard a SpaceX rocket from California, carrying a TPU to test whether AI chips can function in space under real conditions. The satellite, built by Planet Labs, will run 15-minute computational bursts as part of Project Suncatcher, with a larger two-satellite demo planned for next year using laser communication links.

Background

Project Suncatcher is Google's initiative to deploy large-scale AI compute clusters in Earth orbit, aiming to leverage the unique advantages of space for data processing and low-latency global communication.
