Keeping Futhark off the GPU

The Futhark language team addresses a challenge where Elias Smedegaard's BSc thesis required mixing CPU-bound sequential work (graph coloring) with GPU-accelerated parallel work (Jacobian computation via automatic differentiation). Futhark's design default of placing all arrays in GPU memory made this hybrid execution awkward, leading the team to acknowledge a hack over a principled solution.

Background

Futhark is a purely functional array programming language designed for high-performance compilation to GPUs and other parallel hardware. This blog post reflects on practical engineering trade-offs in supporting heterogeneous CPU/GPU memory layouts.
