Rust for CPython (Python Language Summit 2026)

David Hewitt presented the Rust for CPython project at the Python Language Summit 2026, following up on initial testing at PyCon US 2025. The project, led by core developers Kirill Podoprigora and Emma Smith, aims to integrate Rust into CPython to address rising crash rates from complex features like the new parser, JIT, and free-threading. A team of ~60 developers, including Rust project delegation, is working on a PEP draft with proposed timelines and success criteria.

Background

Python has been exploring ways to improve CPython's performance and safety, with ongoing projects like the new parser (PEG), JIT compiler, and free-threading. Rust adoption in systems programming has been proven by Android and Linux kernel integration experiences.
